Purpose and goal

The goal of the HiCut project is to prepare the market introduction of VibraCoat technologies. In order to reach the goal, the activities in the project have been devoted to scale up the process technology, to characterize the material nano-structure, to test and validate the VibraCoat shims in laboratory and industrial field tests for machining performance and to develop business models for VibraCoat technology, material and product commercialization. All these activities were accomplished at the end of the project.

Expected results and effects

HiCut project has demonstrated that, compared to any other solution on the market, it offers a simple and efficient solution for improving the tool life of the inserts and consequently the stability of the machining process. Field tests at industrial companies has shown an improvement of the tool life up to 200%. This plug and produce solution can be straightforward applied to the majority of the cutting tools on the market. HighCut tooling has a strong impact on sustainable, energy-efficient manufacturing as well as on the consumption of strategic raw materials.

Planned approach and implementation

The HiCut project results are significant with respect to three areas: 1.Technological area Upscaling of production in terms of increased deposition rates (up to 8 micro/hr.), capacity (400-450 shims/batch) and process optimization in terms of improved quality of coatings (resistance to thermal and mechanical loads). 2.Commercialization area - 14 types of VibraCoat shims are available in conformity with ISO standard, and 4 configurations. 3.Business area: business plan for two business models; (i) sales through tool distributors and (ii) licensing of coating equipment.
