E10602 Eurostar Getica AB Plasma ferritin immunoassay for whole blood samples

Reference number
Coordinator GETICA AB - Sahlgrenska Science Park
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 132 707
Project duration September 2016 - December 2018
Status Completed
Venture Eurostars

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project was to develop a product for determination of plasma ferritin in whole blood. Market demanded, however, a more advanced product that can provide a better picture of the donor´s iron status with a simple and quick analysis. We have developed a well-functioning prototype product that quickly provides information on both hemoglobin and plasma ferritin level for a simple capillary blood sample.

Expected results and effects

All reagents included in the product have been developed by and are produced by Getica. The choice to make the more advanced product, has simplified the production process for antibodies. This also resulted in production or assembly of other components at Getica. A prototype instrument with camera-based detection has been developed jointly by Getica and Gentian. The new product is more commercially attractive and shows significantly higher sensitivity than the original product. Internal clinical tests on blood samples from healthy volunteers are ongoing.

Planned approach and implementation

Getica’s main responsibility has been development of reagents for analysis of plasma ferritin in whole blood as well as responsibility for clinical studies and preparation of scientific manuscripts. During this project, Getica had an extensive role in the product development and have been optimizing all reagents to achieve good sensitivity for the ferritin analysis. The companies included in the Eurostars project have worked in close collaboration with weekly R&D meetings in order to start a joint internal clinical study in the final phase of the project.
