Purpose and goal

The antenna group at Chalmers has contributed to new knowledge that forms the basis for new algorithms and software that will be commercialized by Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd. The devised figures of merit will lead to optimization of wireless communication in indoor environments. In the long term these will be of great help to both architects and construction engineers. The project has fulfilled the goal of helping in the development of technology that will be of great help in both the Telecom and the Construction industry.

Expected results and effects

The project´s results include the definition of new performance measures for indoor wireless networks taking into account the geometry of buildings and wave propagation characteristics. The project has contributed to the development of prototype software, patent applications and publications in reputable journals and relevant conferences in the research areas of wireless communications, antennas and propagation. The expected effect is renewed competence, new research opportunities, new business opportunities and collaboration between British and Swedish companies.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is based on the idea that buildings can be characterized with regard to the quality of the communication performance that can be achieved in indoors. Dr. Jiliang Zhang was hired to work on the project together with other researchers at Chalmers. Regular meetings have been held between Ranplan and Chalmers researchers who together contributed to the project. The theoretical work has been done at Chalmers, but Ranplan´s engineers have implemented the algorithms that are included in the software that will be commercialized in the near future.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
