Digital pain treatment for low back pain

Funding from Vinnova SEK 5 489
Project duration June 2018 - May 2019
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Our idea is to offer patients with back pain an eight-week structured digital course on how to handle back pain. Our concept is based on the patient getting started quickly with a biopsychosocial rehabilitation during the waiting time for specialist assessment. The market is huge and the need exceeds the supply. An early rehab start shortens sick leave but also increases the chance of getting well. Our payment model is SaaS for an eight-week digital course which the healthcare provider pays per patient or as bundle pay.

Expected results and effects

We now have a useful digital product at an acceptable technology and content level (MVP). We have verified a need from both operators and patients for such assistance, but the willingness to pay to participate in a development project at this early stage has been limited. Together with an expert, we have investigated the regulatory conditions and a CE marking is currently not needed.

Planned approach and implementation

We have made a market and user analysis according to plan as well as evaluated the regulatory requirements. We have managed to carry out a pilot series with the Orthopedic Department in Örebro before but stopped as the waiting time for seeing the specialist at the hospital disappeared. Good for patients in Örebro but not for our project. The study will be resumed if the waiting period of two months returns. We have contacts with a new partner we expect to participate implementing and verifying the benefits of the product.
