Important results from the project
The challenge and the significance of this project were to understand the technical impact, any changes in weights as well as actual strength of the new, hybrid composite structure (aramid plies/ conventional carbon fibre). The potential was shown through the literature study, with the experimental part yet to be performed.
Expected long term effects
Within the project, the partners went through the literature and selected the manufacturing process. The selection was made based on the company’s existing material design. The literature study revealed three material cases that can be promising; pure aramide, zylon and blended aramid/carbon fibre. Unfortunately, the respective experimental tests were not performed, in order to evaluate each case.
Approach and implementation
Within the project, the approach that the consortium followed was to evaluate current practices of existing solutions. Due to lack of implementation in the lightweight airplane sector, the research institute together with the SME through discussions planned a material layout featuring sandwich form. The skins were designed to accommodate both carbon fibre components, as well as aramid woven, while a commercial core was selected.
