Development of innovative concepts for competitive production of liquid biogas

Reference number
Coordinator RISE RESEARCH INSTITUTES OF SWEDEN AB - Biovetenskap och Material/Jordbruk och Livsmedel, Uppsala
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 463 400
Project duration November 2015 - March 2018
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The two main goals for the project was: 1.To show that an ashfilter of own design kan replace existing technology for polishing biomethane containing CO2 to a degree that allows for LBG-production which can lead to new pantents and a new swedish product. 2.To investigate new chains of technology in order to streamline LBG-production. Environmental aspects, market potential and distribution was also investigated.

Expected results and effects

Laboratory tests of an ash filter of own design show that it is possible to reduce the amount of CO2 to levels below what is necessary to produce LBG that fulfills standards for liquefied methane. Technology chains for production and distribution of LBG has successfully been analyzed to quantify costs, energy consumption and environmental impact which is expected to increase the competitiveness for LBG. Market analysis, LCA and distribution analysis has shown that there is practical potential and usefulness to increasing the use of LBG in Sweden significantly in a not to distant future.

Planned approach and implementation

This joint project has been carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute; SLU, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences; RISE Research Institutes of Sweden; Biogas Öst and Gasum. The project has developed and analysed a new ash-based filter used for polishing of biomethane and analysed production, distribution and the current and future Swedish market situation for liquefied biogas (LBG).

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
