Development of an Acoustophoresis Instrument

Reference number
Coordinator ACOUSORT AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration April 2013 - November 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

AcouSort AB is a technology company that was founded to commercialize IP and technologies from the acoustofluidics research at LTH in Lund and associated biomedical application development. In the present project we have productized an acoustophoresis system for cleanup and isolation of particles and cells quickly, gently and in small volumes. The instrument is designed as a platform, on which we will apply new product ideas within acoustofluidics. The prototype functions very well and the project enters formal design testing and beta-fieldtests.

Results and expected effects

The product is a small selfcontained benchtop instrument. The acoustophoresis chip itself is designed as a consumable which can easily be changed by the user. Formal designtesting is not finished, but in preliminary tests the system performs better than specifications. After finished testing we will launch a small productionseries on the market, we will use it as a base for industrial developmentcollaborations, and as a platform for our further internal product development.

Approach and implementation

The project was executed according to the Medical Device development process in view of future applications within this field. The core team works within AcouSort in Lund. Software and electronics design was made with an external partner. All hardware was purchased or externally manufactured, with assembly and testing within AcouSort. Through the management´s network in the Medical Device Industry, we have had access to a highly qualified steering committee, and by our close contacts with both technology- and applications research we have secured support during the project.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
