Development of a test method and facility for generic Rock Bolt performance Tests

Reference number
Coordinator Swerim AB - Avd VB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 230 000
Project duration September 2015 - May 2018
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Swedish mining and metal producing industry - SIP Swedish Mining Innovation

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project is to provide increased availability of qualified test equipment for rock bolts to mining industry, tunnel builders, rock bolt manufacturers as well as R&D organizations, in Sweden primarily, to improve and streamline product development of rock bolts and thereby, contribute to increased underground safety. The goal has been to develop unique test methods as well as to design, manufacture and take into operation equipment for testing all types of rock bolts on the market, and this has been achieved.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in fully operational test equipment for dynamic and quasi-static pull and shear testing of all types of rock bolts present on the market. The test facility makes it possible for Swedish and European rock bolt manufacturers to significantly streamline and shorten the development processes for new rock bolts, which in the long run contribute to safer mining and tunneling with increased productivity. In addition, the test facility has created a platform for future R&D-projects, both nationally and internationally, supporting future development in the sector.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been coordinated by Swerim. Test methods and equipment are developed by Swerim, Nordkonsult and NMP. Parts of the equipment are manufactured by Galvano Tia in Norway and in addition, manufacturing and installation have been purchased from NMV and Gisab in Piteå. SSAB has contributed with steel materials, stairs and walkways. All project partners have contributed with rock bolts to test and verify methods and equipment. The work layout has been good but suffered delays due to unfortunate circumstances. However, the result has not been affected in any important aspect.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
