Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The original aim of the announcement was to cross-fertilize research in India and Sweden. We have published 6 scientific articles in highly ranked journals together with Indian partners. Before the project started, there was a personal contact with the PI at the Indian partner who visited Lund on several occasions during the project. Indian students have been in Lund for 2-3 months. The Swedish group, both PI and students, have been to India a couple of times, on visits, at conferences but also to carry out joint experiments. We currently have no ongoing project with IIT Kanpur.

Expected results and effects

The project to develop an injectable bone substitute that can improve the healing and attachment of screws has been successful. Bench tests have shown that the release is better and lasts longer than previously used carriers. We have a clear measurable effect in animal model. We have developed a protocol for how to inject in humans. We have tested the protocol in bench trials, modeled the spread in the computer and are currently doing the first of several clinical trials.

Planned approach and implementation

We planned joint trials, where an Indian student spent time in Lund and a Swedish student in Kanpur, which led to the joint publications. From our side, the plan was for the Indian doctoral student to continue on a postdoc with us, but this was postponed and later cancelled. The final trials and processing of data were handled locally in Lund as well as the planning of the initial clinical studies.
