Design of a tool for manufacturing of AM-reinforced titaium components

Reference number
Coordinator RISE IVF AB - Avdelning Tillverkning
Funding from Vinnova SEK 325 000
Project duration July 2018 - June 2019
Status Completed

Important results from the project

This project intended to design and manufacture a pre-forming fixture applied before welding and a tool component with vital function in a forming process to produce an aero engine component of interest to GKN. The component is unique and includes a reinforcement attached before hot forming in order to produce a high strength part in an effective way. The project has delivered the pre-forming fixture and the tool part by Rydverken, welding has taken place at GKN and the forming process has been designed using FE-analyses at RISE IVF.

Expected long term effects

The project has contributed with the necessary prerequisites required to study the manufacturing process chain for the specific reinforced sheet metal component. The final hot forming tests will take place during autumn 2019 within the closely related test project “LIGHTest”. A larger research and development project were formulated, applied and granted funding within LIGHTer. This creates the possibility for the SME, institute and GKN to further develop their collaboration in the specific area; hot forming of aero engine components.

Approach and implementation

The project managing was performed by RISE IVF at which also the manufacturing process chain was studied using FE-analyses. GKN contributed with necessary information of the part geometries and welding the reinforcement to the pre-formed blanks. Rydverken and RISE IVF has collaborated in designing the pre-fixture and tool part. Rydverken successfully manufactured the desired components and the future hot forming tests are planned to autumn 2019.
