Important results from the project

The objectives of the project have been to develop, test and evaluate methods and tools for data journalism in Sweden. These objectives has largely been met through the project´s many activities. During course of the project, Swedish regional media companies with small resources have started working with data journalism and the expertise in data journalism has grown nationally much due to the Nordic data journalism conference organized by the project. A prototype called Resursbanken has been developed and tested as the partner companies have uploaded data and related information.

Expected long term effects

The project has resulted in that the media companies have invested in data journalism initiatives and collaborated across companies. Furthermore, all of the participating media companies have implemented organizational changes. Some of these changes may have occurred as a result of the project, while others have a more diffuse connection to the project. The changes, however, regardless of their origin have been a part of how the project progressed. More detailed description can be found in the final report, attached as appendix 1.

Approach and implementation

The project has carried out eight workshops, nine steering committee meetings, three reference group meetings, a Nordic two-day conference focused on data journalism, three hackathons, two study tours to NICAR in the United States, and smaller activities between researchers and the partner companies. A network has been built of Nordic actors, and presentations have been given in more traditional media-industry specific contexts. But above all, the most important work has been done in the newsrooms at the participating companies as part of their core journalistic activities.
