Important results from the project

The CyClaDes project is designed to promote the impact of the human element in shipping by introducing a user-centered perspective. The outcome of the project will help to increase the safety for ship, crew, cargo and the environment. SSPA has analysed the impact of the various organisations and stakeholders in the marine industry on the safety of shipping. A conning display has been developed and evaluated by SSPA following a UCD framework made available from UCD expert partners in the project.

Expected long term effects

SSPA shows that there is a strong impact of organisational influences on safety from owners, managers, operators (including their office location), insurance companies, yards, classification societies, flag states, and even vetting inspections and port state control. A properly designed conning can have the ability to reduce damages coming from contact with fixed or floating objects. SSPA has demonstrated and evaluated a conning according to UCD.

Approach and implementation

The safety study used complementing methodology: A literature survey with comparisons to other industries such as aviation and offshore. Identification of key indicators for safety culture by performing a structured interview survey and analysing the correlation to accident statistics. The conning design was done on the principals of UCD, i.e.: 1.Plan the human-centred design process 2.Understand and specify the context of use 3.Specify the user and organizational requirements 4.Produce designs and prototypes 5.Carry out user based assessment
