Important results from the project
The goal was to develop a method that can give refugees, traumatized from war, a safe way to establishment in the Swedish society. This includes investigation of the status (illness, function, language, knowledge, interests), as well as rehabilitation, language learning and a continued way into the Swedish society through employment or studies.
Expected long term effects
The work has been developed in collaboration with Region Skåne and the Swedish Employment Service. The method which has been developed is based on the activities of green industries: forestry, horticulture and agriculture. We have developed a safe method to find the refugees who could benefit from the method; developed the rehabilitation method and a method to analyse and confirm the participants level of function and ability to work, and started the development of a more effective language learning. Work is underway to measure the effectiveness of the method and to certify the method.
Approach and implementation
SLU, the Swedish Public Employment Service (ES) and Region Skåne began to work on a study on how to establish refugees with health problems in March 2015. The refugees were recruited via ES rehabilitation group to SLU Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden: having a team consisting of an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a landscape engineer, a landscape architect, a doctor, and language support. The team has gradually developed the method, where the evaluation shows good results. The method is quality assured during 2017/2018. We plan to spread the method, maybe as franchises.
