Purpose and goal
Despite sandwich materials excellent lightweight characteristics the use in the automotive industry today is low. To get a real impact the automotive industry needs sandwich materials that meet the stringent requirements of mechanical properties and especially the current production costs and rates. Two sandwich materials were evaluated, with cores of metal and wood, with respect to technical performance, manufacturing costs, lifecycle aspects and implementability.
Results and expected effects
Industry considers laminates as interesting alternative lightweight materials but increased implementation is not a top priority. However, low weight and the ability to reduce noise and vibration, are vital properties and therefore implementation is expected to increase in the future. The CoreWich project has contributed greatly to Swerea IVF knowledge, skills and ability to guide the Swedish industry in future research and development focused on sandwich materials.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out in five steps: 1. Identify industrial applications of the material. 2. Prototyping of sandwich materials. 3. Technically evaluate the performance, cost, implementability and analysis life cycle aspects. 4. Provide a basis for continued research and development 5. Disseminate results to Swedish industry. All milestones were successfully carried and fulfilled within project frames.
