Configuration and Optimization of Operation Sequences

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Institutionen för signaler och system
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 200 000
Project duration November 2011 - June 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal of COOP is to achieve an effective control and optimization of complex systems, focusing on the interaction between product, process and control development. This is obtained by a novel visualization technique in the tool Sequence Planner, where a production system can be evaluated from different perspectives. A further second goal is to minimize the energy consumption of complex production systems. This is achieved among others by FlexLink´s new online procedure for low energy and soft motion of conveyor systems.

Results and expected effects

The Sequence Planner tool has been developed to be able to represent and optimize operations in a production system from different views (for instance product- and production perspectives). Based on the notion of operations in Sequence Planner, flexible automation systems are created in a simplified way. Together with FlexLink, a number of functions for energy minimization of conveyor system have also been developed. Implementations show that these new functions can give significant energy savings and less wear of involved system components.

Approach and implementation

The project has mainly been performed by two persons who completed their PhD exam during the first year of the project. In that way the project got a number of ideas and preliminary results. On the other hand, COOP generated the resources to further develop these results in an industrial direction. Furthermore, the collaboration with FlexLink gave an additional injection, due to their long-term engagement in the development of a decision support for sustainable design and control of conveyor systems.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
