Conceptual Aircraft Design LABoratory (CADLAB)

Reference number
Coordinator SAAB Aktiebolag - SAAB AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 500 000
Project duration August 2014 - May 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to evaluate and develop new architectures and methods to meet requirements of concept development framework. This has been achieve through the development of a framework based on a central data model that enables information exchange between different property models. This has shown how such a framework can be set up and what difficulties can arise from the tools / models that you want to integrate. Within this framework, it has been show that certain parts of the design development and interconnection of models can be automated.

Expected results and effects

One result is the degree of automation that has been shown to be achievable within concept development; parts of those results have been implement on Saab. The development of a common data model that enables communication between the different property models has been develop. Saab´s internal methodology development will benefit from this in its coming implementation of a new framework for conceptual design. Another result is the skills both PhD students have built up, this competence will contribute to the training of new engineers and new industry skills.

Planned approach and implementation

Saab and Liu have planned the work together. Through two PhD students, LiU has done the work of showing the principles and implementing various solutions that Saab has reviewed and evaluated with LiU. In some case Saab has implement result of the project; and adapted it to existing methodology. The implementation of Saab has been realize by Saab staff or through master thesis work. A joint workshop has been conduct, where the PhD students have presented their research and Saab performed hands on tests. Changes and adjustments to the project plan have been taken in common accords.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
