Project duration October 2018 - November 2020
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

PiezoMotor is a world-leading manufacturer of micro motors based on piezoelectric materials. High precision motion in ultra-high vacuum is a promising market the environment, however, is very challenging. In this project, we have developed a new surface coating for new generation of micro motors suitable for ultra-high vacuum. We have demonstrated tenfold longer lifetime as compared to motors without the surface treatment using a custom designed vacuum test chamber.

Expected results and effects

The choice of material combinations is crucial in development of micro motors with high performance. Especially in ultra-high vacuum, new solutions are essential. Therefore, it is important that we have identified solutions that overcome the limitations of the existing materials. The successful results from the first pilot tests demonstrated the potential of our solution. Furthermore, we have developed the whole methodology including knowledge based material selection, synthesis, and testing.

Planned approach and implementation

Vacuum is a challenging environment where the established solutions often fail. The combination of three partners with complementary expertise was therefore essential for success of the project. We could address all aspects from selection and synthesis of materials, design of a test system as well as service relevant testing, and finally studying the fundamental processes taking place between surfaces in vacuum. This way, we could not only solve the challenge but also identify intriguing research questions.
