CAT Connected Automated Truck

Reference number
Coordinator Ericsson AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 500 000
Project duration October 2018 - November 2019
Status Completed
Venture Strategic Innovation Program Drive Sweden

Purpose and goal

The project has achieved the goals of demonstrating how driverless truck transport can be made possible with enhanced connection based on 5G, connected services and ecosystem and remote control of vehicles. Requirements on connectivity, other technical infrastructure and connected services have been identified and tested in practical experiments. A number of public demonstrations highlights challenges and opportunities with automated transport solutions without drivers in vehicles.

Expected results and effects

- Tests showed that single vehicles can be remotely controlled via properly adjusted 4G / LTE, but that 5G will be needed for larger vehicle fleets. - Attempts to drive on public roads in collaboration with DB Schenker, Lidl and others provided valuable experience for future introduction on a larger scale. - The potential to improve efficiency in freight transport with electric automated vehicles and transport system solutions is considered huge in terms of reduced emissions, increased security and business potential.

Planned approach and implementation

Main activities of the project: - Initial technical tests with remote control by Einride T-pod at ASTA Zero. - Public road testing in Jönköping in collaboration with DB Schenker. - Experiments in city-like environment in Kista with Einride and with research vehicle RCV. - Demonstrations at Mobile World Congress with the vehicle at Asta Zero in Sweden and remote controlled from Barcelona. In all attempts, Drive Sweden Innovation Cloud was used to connect an extended ecosystem with traffic data and functionality for geofence etc.
