Venture Challenge-Driven Innovation – Stage 1 initiation

Purpose and goal

The project goals which have been met are, the objectives of completing the development of the project group, developing ideas and identifying possible paths for the commercial deployment of carbon capture and storage in Sweden, analyze the conditions for distributing the costs of the extensive investment required by innovative incentives, as well as involving other companies, agencies and organizations in the work. The goal which has not been met at the date of this report is to develop the draft project agreement.

Expected results and effects

The Project Group was completed based on the analyzes and conclusions developed in the project. Thus three key players were identified that were recruited to the project. It was one of Sweden´s biggest emitters of carbon dioxide, Cementa, and a financial investor with a long investment horizon, which meant that the 7th AP Fund was included in the work, and the Swedish Transport Agency Trafikverket, which is one of the authorities which have made the most progress with their climate strategies and has one of the largest budgets for emissions-intensive investments in Sweden.

Planned approach and implementation

The main focus of the project was to develop so-called value chains, which follows emissions from large point sources such as steel mills and cement works, through various processing steps down to end consumers and end users. By identifying such value chains, those who provide the best conditions for new incentives to be developed are identified. This goal was achieved by internal analysis, but also in close contact with the different actors within and outside the project constellation.
