Purpose and goal

The goal of Cleanwater is to reduce the loading of pharmaceutical residues and microplastics on the Baltic Sea. The work has been based on three objectives: mapping of emission sources, development of energy-efficient solutions for removal of pharmaceuticals and development of new analytical methods. The Department of Chemical Engineering, Primozone, AnoxKaldnes and Sweden Water Research have successfully evaluated and developed technical solutions based on ozonation and biofilm technology.

Expected results and effects

The Swedish project members have preferably worked with technology and knowledge development in order to create more efficient processes and conditions for wise decisions when introducing new treatment technologies. Removal rates, cost efficiency and climate impact have been studied on the basis of conditions applicable to the Baltic Sea region. The results are expected to, among other things, contribute to ongoing and future upgrades of municipal sewage treatment plants.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been structured on the basis of nine different work packages focusing on the different techniques while development of analysis methodology, mapping of wastewater load and evaluation of costs and climate impact have been handled in separate work packages. The work has been carried out on both a laboratory and pilot scale, which has been time-consuming but at the same time created the conditions for both practical relevance and a high scientific level.
