Funding from Vinnova SEK 250 000
Project duration December 2013 - May 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Aim and objective of this pilot study was to investigate the feasibility of a test bed for façades of bio-based materials. The focus was multi-storey buildings and facade systems for modern manufacturing and construction techniques. Discussions with stakeholders in the wood and construction industry about requirements, needs and benefits of a test bed, and inventory of existing test methods and the need for new methods provides a basis for developing a test bed. Organization and scope of the test bed have been investigated. A project plan for a new application has not been developed yet.

Results and expected effects

The proposed test bed will provide more new bio-based facade products and facilitate companies, such as architects and carpentries, to test new ideas. Problems and opportunities with bio-based facade systems have been described on the basis of detail and design processes, and testing for different requirements and parameters. The cost of building products is critical, so fast and efficient methods of verification are required. Need for development of new measurement and testing methods have been identified in some areas such as fire, connections, details and constructability.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out in collaboration with architects, builders and wood suppliers. The pilot study has included an inventory of the needs and benefits of the test bed, and what the participants expect of new façade systems. It has included meetings and discussions with the different partners, the collection of overall requirements and uses, as well as a review of valuation methods, test methods and measurement systems.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
