Important results from the project
The project has contributed to an industrialization through proving that fiber optic measurement methods may enables health monitoring for detection of small mechanical deformations in the fixture. To succeed, temperature compensation is required, since this measurement system also is very sensitive to thermal variations. The project has increased the knowledge in this and has, together with the companies involved, decided to continue developing the technique in new projects to be able to adapt this measurement technology to this specific application.
Expected long term effects
The most important result is that the project constellation has succeeded to show that it is possible to use fiber optic technology for health monitoring of industrial fixtures. One effect of the project is that Flexprop has decided to continue developing this technique in new projects with the intention of industrial implementation within a few years. Flexprop also has the intention to offer health monitoring as an option when bying such a fixture.
Approach and implementation
The project started with a workshop at SAAB to make sure that the measurement system was functional and to test wireless data transfer (wifi). After this event, a period of trouble shooting and smaller tests took place. During the winter 2015/2016 longer measurement campaigns have been performed with the fixture both unloaded and during production. The focus in the project has been to understand the measurement technology in this application and its flaws or artifacts to get a better understanding of the demands that must be met to accomplish an industrialization of this application.
