Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to develop and deepen the cooperation between Swedish researchers and traffic safety researchers in Malaysia and SAFER. In the first stage, the aim was to provide scientific advice to the project team in Malaysia for the research project ´Innovative solutions to reduce crashes between motorcycles and trucks (iSTREC)´. The research project was completed and progress was made for further deepening cooperation. Two project proposals were developed by Volvo, AIM and UPM, where continued cooperation with SAFER has been requested.

Results and expected effects

Contacts between SAFER and the counterparts in Malaysia deepened; regular teleconferences and two visits to Malaysia were conducted. The motorcycle-truck project was completed and the results provided new knowledge of the problems of interaction between motorcycles and trucks and ideas to improve the safety situation for motorcyclists. A number of new project ideas for possible joint research projects has been developed. A proposal on a MoU / Letter of Intent between MIROS and SAFER was developed. Two project proposals were developed by Volvo, AIM and UPM for further cooperation.

Approach and implementation

The SAFER team´s teleconferences and in-person meetings were adapted to the project team´s schedule in Malaysia in order to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement at every step. A few weeks of delay in the project in Malaysia led to the planned meetings came out of step with those expected input from the project team in Malaysia and the SAFER team had to be flexible. The visits of the counterparties in Malaysia were efficient and gave an open exchange of information between the parties. Ideas for new joint research projects have been presented and circulated among partners.
