A Porous Polymeric Particle Platform for Preparation of Chromatographic Separation Materials

Reference number
Coordinator DIDUCO AB - Diduco
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 200 000
Project duration December 2015 - December 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has successfully developed a material platform for porous polymeric particles as base for manufacturing several different liquid chromatographic stationary phases with different separation selectivity. We have also built a comprehensive knowledgebase about manufacturing and quality control of polymeric particles and the characterisation of stationary phases for ion chromatography. The particle synthesis methods have been scaled up for commercial introduction. Follow-up projects are planned within the company and are discussed with commercial partners.

Expected results and effects

The project has made a significant contribution to establishing the company as an interesting and knowledge-based partner and OEM supplier on the global liquid chromatography market in general and for ion chromatography in particular. This has also had a positive impact on the interests of the company´s other products. Certain work on optimisation of surface properties remains in order to reach a product ready for commercial introduction having improved properties against previous materials.

Planned approach and implementation

The project layout and execution at the company´s premises worked very well, but the technical challenges in the synthesis were underestimated, which meant that the project was not completed within the set timeframe. However, the difficulties were overcome after intensive work, which increased the skills within the company. Feedback from customers, distributors and competition, together with the university collaborations, have placed the company in a advantageous position for future growth within materials and methods for several ion chromatography analysis situations.
