A pilot study on Övertorneå municipality as a testbed for carbon dioxide credits from the forest

Reference number
Coordinator ÖVERTORNEÅ KOMMUN - Tillväxtenheten
Funding from Vinnova SEK 433 688
Project duration November 2012 - May 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The pilot study has fulfilled its purpose to plan a test bed for carbon dioxide credits in forestry, to identify other environmental technologies and to write an application for a full scale project. In the test bed there will be access to a functional infrastructure of well documented test areas in practical scale and methods for measuring/sampling/data handling/analysis. The test bed can therefore be used for other purposes and investigations in the ecosystem, such as growth promoting management/techniques.

Results and expected effects

The pilot study has achieved the expected results. A draft of a project plan for a full-scale project has been written and will be submitted to Vinnova before 3 September. The project has been ´anchored´ in the project group, but due to reorganisations taking place at LKAB it is not yet clear to what extent LKAB will be participating in the project. The test bed will be a part of the new ABCD project. An application for co-funding from Landstinget and The County council in Norrbotten has been submitted.

Approach and implementation

The pilot study has been conducted as described in the base report. Övertorneå Municipality hired Mattias Johansson to lead the shaping of the test bed and the writing of the project application for the continued project. The work has been conducted in cooperation with the project steering group, where the competences of the different parts have helped in shaping the test site. Problem discussions have helped in shaping the test site, and will continue to do so during the establishment.
