Important results from the project
The purpose was to establish a functional and useful database of interest to as many stakeholders as possible. We consider this to be achieved. We already have a functioning product which is actively promoted, e.g. Solna muni. will start linking to our website. When it comes to open data many agents are however lacking in expertise and as a result of this project some munis. are looking at the issue for the first time. Approx. 18% of all munis. have been contacted. To realise the full potential of our resource the remaining 82% and private actors must be given the possibility to participate.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in many lessons on how open data is handled (see bit.ly/lardom) which facilitates future collections. Positive discussions on open data have been initiated in several munis. due to the real use (Wikipedia) and apolitical nature. Organisations in other countries have expressed their interest in copying the concept as a result of our success. The official data can be enriched in a cost-effective manner through crowd-sourcing, e.g. through the use of GPSs on loan from the association. < 25% of all official data is geolocated - the single largest weakness of the data.
Approach and implementation
The basic functionality of the database and open API was reached at an early stage and were gradually developed to add more functionality. Hackathons resulted in extra functionality, illustrating the possibilities of open data during external communications. Contact with munis. was through several rounds of e-mails and earlier lessons integrated into the communication; in part together with Morus (with which we shared experiences resulting in synergistic effects for both). Much processing was needed to include recieved data. The data was also used to generate lists on Wikipedia.
