Important results from the project
The aim of the project group was to develop a smart sock, "IQ sock", with built-in sensors / electrodes that can regulate blood flow via integrated microelectronics to prevent cardiovascular disease, for example during sitting. A "Minimal viable product", MVP, of the IQ sock has been developed which can be controlled wirelessly via a smartphone, but also which independently in case of prolonged inactivity can find and stimulate the best points on the calf muscles to prevent the development of blood clots.
Expected long term effects
The MVP of the IQ sock constitutes a platform for accelerated development of a finished MedTech product that is perceived as an ordinary sock. This will enable improved compliance to treatment and thus more effective prevention of blood clots than comparable products on the market. The project has resulted in patent applications and a newly started MedTech company, which gives potential to further develop the IQ sock and take it to the market for sale and use.
Approach and implementation
The project was planned and implemented in 5 work packages (WP) with the project participants. WP1 developed market reports, regulatory strategies and an IPR portfolio. In WP2, the textile electrodes / sensors were developed, and integration in the IQ sock. WP3 developed successive prototypes of the IQ sock. WP4 developed the hardware and software to control the IQ sock. WP5 optimized the various settings for treatment with the IQ sock.
