Smart sensing platform for environmental and safety applications

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - ACREO, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 99 856
Project duration December 2019 - March 2020
Status Completed
Venture Sweden Brazil Innovation Initiative
Call Planning grant för collaboration with Brazil 2019

Important results from the project

The proposal fulfilled its goal of building a consortium with two branches of the Brazilian industrial research institute SENAI, Electrochemestry and Mineral Technologies. The proposal to be explored in a proposal to a future VINNOVA-EMBRAPII Call is the heavy duty mining equipment battery monitoring using fiber optics NPS sensors. This future project proposal will have a strong environmental claim by supporting mining companings into moving towards more green solutions such as changing its diesel driven equipment with Li-ion batteries and thus reducing pollution emission.

Expected long term effects

This grant enabled to build a consortium between Swedish partners RISE AB and Insplorion AB, and Brazilian partners from two SENAI Institutes: Electrochemistry and Mineral Technologies. Online conferences were held to discuss possibilities to collaborate in a future bilateral call. The proposal to be submitted is the heavy duty mining equipment battery monitoring using fiber optics NPS sensors. Such project proposal will combine the expertise of both SENAI institutes involved in this partnership and will also have a positive ecological impact.

Approach and implementation

The consortium building was done by online calls and a short market survey. In the survey it was identified that several mining equipment producers companies such as Epiroc are employing Li-ion batteries in their heavy-duty machines. Thus, the efficient monitoring of such batteries will have a large market niche.
