Status Completed
Venture Collaboration projects in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure

Purpose and goal

The project´s goal has been to build an security solution for doping control labs worldwide, adapted to the needs and wants of the Swedish anti-doping lab at Huddinge Sjukhus as test site, addressing integrity threats from both a mechanical and technological perspective. Our development focuses on the prerequisites of a secure digital process for a selection of the lab´s daily operations and involved creating an immutable digital twin process using blockchain technology in order to enable a continuous chain of conduct leading to a more efficient and fair anti-doping testing process.

Expected results and effects

The project identified how to improve on the integrity of test vials in transport and handling, in regards both to mechanical use and work environment for the staff; to better be able to visually inspect vials for manipulation attempts, alongside easier opening and storage. A fully functioning solution was developed, based on blockchain technology, where codes for bottles, operators and testing situation (e.g. National track & field) is stored alongside time codes, bringing fourth a new tool in the strive to obtain a correct chain-of-custody from arena to analysis at the lab.

Planned approach and implementation

A new type of opening device was developed for visual inspection, automatic tag reading and removal of safety lid occur in a series of operations. Readings are send to a secure server without referral to the athletes. Integration of data occurs at a later stage, in the international anti-doping committée´s (WADA) database, and authtenticity can be cross-checked with the block chain contents. All readouts within a time interval, form a tree of checksums (Merkle tree) which is added to the blockchain - ultimately proving that a given information was accessible by a role at a given time.
