Purpose and goal

This project, Second Road phase 2 (SRF2), address challenges within the areas of systems and function integration. The goal is a simulation-based infrastructure supporting parallel, continuous and exhaustive test activities for faster development in spite of fewer test vehicles. Also open innovation is part of that target. Roll out of Continuous Integration ís now happening at Volvo Cars. SRF2 has not only contributed by adapting simulation environments but also preparation of processes and tools.

Expected results and effects

By achievements in a number of related areas we can now continuously exercise and verify functionality throughout the complete vehicle development phase. For example, we can integrate models from different tools, schedule nightly tests and share scenarios between groups. An already apparent result is the new planning tool, FIP2, based on SRF2 findings and requirements. FIP2 supports agile development and is used at VCC for development of new software targeting 2019 and forward. These are necessary contributions to competiveness in a software oriented automotive business.

Planned approach and implementation

SRF2 is divided into several sub projects to ensure focus on multiple strategic areas: Virtual test environments, continuous integration, traffic scenarios, test automation and open innovation support. Regular common project meetings and bazaars have clearly contributed to the spreading of information and competence. In effect, SRF2 has become the local arena for simulation based virtual development. The open final seminar, co-arranged with the Heavy Road project, was a successful whole-day event alternating presentations with coffee and demos.
