Important results from the project

The aim of the pre study was to investigate the market potential for international spread of innovation that is being developed within the project Rest till Bäst, with the aim of initiating cooperation with a European partner and other contacts in Europe for commercial and academic cooperation. Through several activities (including study visits and conference participation) we have mapped the market in large parts of Europe, with volume potential, carbon sink trade initiatives, pyrolysis for sludge treatment, design of web based biochar platform, and established contact in Europe.

Expected long term effects

A collaboration has been initiated between Skånefrö, Ecoera and Pyreg with for pyrolysis of sludge (for future internationalization). The cooperation will further develop Swedish expertise, with future export opportunities. A consortium for EU projects has also been established with five academies in Europe (including the prominent UK Biochar Center). Establishment of project cooperation has been based on the internationally unique development of biochar usage in many urban solutions in Sweden. Furthermore, contact has been made with, among others, Carbonfuture.earth.

Approach and implementation

Six topics have been addressed; (1) sludge pyrolysis (2) carbon sink trading (3) volume potential (4) European biochar market review (5) webb based biochar platform (6) establishing cooperation for EU projects and business development. Completed activities consisted of physical and virtual meetings, study visits in Europe, participation in three international conferences, interviews and article search. The method with a range of topics may limit the depth, but enabled establishing of many contacts and an important broad understanding of current European biochar development.
