Reserch project Innovation platforms

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Mistra Urban Futures — centrum för hållbar stadsutveckling
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 800 000
Project duration October 2013 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The formative evaluation gives a structured understanding of challenges innovation in sustainable urban development puts forward. Example of challenges identified by the project are: deep conflicts between legal principles, the importance of integrating projects (like the platforms) in the existing innovation system and city administration, that the innovation activities challenge the existing roles and competences of the public administration and forces academia, business and the public administration to collaborate in new ways.

Results and expected effects

The project has given new insights for both Vinnova and the cities involved in the program about several issues such as: what do urban innovation mean, what challenges and opportunities are innovation platforms facing and how can they be organized. The project has resulted in two reports and a book chapter. The empirical material is also used for two scientific papers submitted for publication.

Approach and implementation

The project has had a novel approach where a transdiciplinar team of researchers has analysed the platforms from different perspectives. This has lead to interesting cross fertilizations of knowledge fields and enabled the researchers to have both a operational, hands on perspective on the innovation platforms, as well as a more theoretical approach which puts the innovation platforms into a larger context.
