Important results from the project
Ligna Energy develops batteries based on forest raw materials together with LiU (LOE). Packaging material is an important aspect of the battery and the purpose of the project was to evaluate packaging material incl. separators from forest. A promising paper aluminum laminate was identified and demonstrated in a pouch cell. Cellulose-based separators have proven suitable for coin cell batteries but more complicated to use in cylindrical 18650 cells due to a more complex electrolyte filling of the viscous aqueous electrolyte developed in collaboration with LOE.
Expected long term effects
A promising paper/aluminum laminate was identified and demonstrated in a pouch cell. Cellulose-based separators have proven suitable for coin cell batteries but more complicated to use in cylindrical 18650 cells due to a more complex electrolyte filling Process of the viscous aqueous electrolyte developed in collaboration with LOE. Cellulose-based separators will continue to be used in some battery designs that are under development.
Approach and implementation
Project goals and search for partners within Vinnova´s competence center DCC were presented. RISE (PEA) showed interest in cellulose (CEL) stability and the use of CEL separators. Tasks: 1. Evaluation of forest-based pouch and cylinder materials 2. Evaluation of CEL stability 3. Production of 18650 cells with CEL separator. The project has focused on blocks 1 and 3. The interaction between separator and electrolyte has been studied in 18650 cells with battery and supercapacitor electrodes. Evaluations have been made with post mortem analyzes and electrical measurements.
