Important results from the project
The aim was to investigate if the accuracy of bulk residual measurements, using the Contour method was improved by replacing Electronic Discharge machining (EDM) with Abrasive microwaterjet cutting (AWJ). A number of trials have been carried out indicating that the accuracy of calculating bulk residual stresses is likely to be improved when using EDM comparing to AWJ. Thus the recommendations is not to replace EDM with AWJ in connection to the Contour method. The objective of of the project has been achieved.
Expected long term effects
The result indicates that EDM should not be replaced by AWJ in conjunction with the Contour method. Further studies regarding the effect of AWJ on the cut surface and possibilities to adjust and adapt AWJ process parameters in order to improve the results are recommended.
Approach and implementation
RISE IVF, Finepart and GKN participated in the project. Physical tests were performed on a component and test details in material Haynes 282. GKN contributed with component and test pieces in Haynes 282 material that were cut with EDM at RISE IVF and with AWJ at Finepart. Comparative XRD residual stress measurements were performed by RISE IVF. Geometric springback and surface structure were compared using GOM. AWJ surface structure investigated using confocal microscope at RISE IVF.
