Important results from the project

The purpose was to, within the framework of Visioner: i norr, develop ideas for the twin cities of Boden and Luleå that inspire the municipalities to build future living environments based on sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion. Our goal was to interpret the concept of ´distance´ through artistic methodology, with a focus both in and beyond the city centre. In the process, we wanted to engage and involve the local community in the visions for the future.

Expected long term effects

Turning the map and looking beyond the perceived distance between Boden and Luleå, we found the idea to live under the broader umbrella, the Arctic Circle. A hand stretch away are communities on the same latitude with similar perspectives and problems. We also introduce a new concept for informal networks, the cultural microsystem. This concept gives the municipalities a tool to strengthen social sustainability during rapid change. In addition, we propose concrete measures such as a local currency and strengthened cooperation between LTU and the cultural sector.

Approach and implementation

The starting point was Norrbotten´s technological mega system and the powerful traces it leaves in the landscape. However, our focus was on its impact on people´s lives and memories, which we investigated through site visits and citizen dialogues. Through artistic methods, we created a broadened narrative, which also includes sensory experiences and conveys the experience of a state. Something that will be a starting point for further work.
