Important results from the project

In the E-Nav Project, the ultimate objective was to further advance a sail plan optimization platform for the shipping industry, developing the technology from TRL 3 to TRL 6. The goal is to develop a sail plan service and online training platform for the shipping industry. Ultimately, E-NAV will compute and transmit optimized sail plans to fleet managers and navigators, reducing fuel consumption, minimizing hull fatigue and reducing CO2 emissions. E-NAV will also include a training module with online gamification tools to teach navigators in a simple and effective manner.

Expected long term effects

The E-Nav service utilizes the latest wealth of metocean and EO data coming from the European Copernicus and related programmes, and merging them together to maximize the combined information, allows E-Nav to offer unprecedented metocean parameter forecast accuracy for sail routes and their optimization. Using advanced models of ship performance, and the innovative optimizer module, the E-Nav service has shown positive results when tested.and achieving all major milestones; the consortium partners are now seeking further funding in order to prepare the service for market.

Approach and implementation

The overall development took place over the course of 3 years and beneficiaries worked collaboratively in a multi-national team in order to deliver the project results. Testing and validation was coordinated by internal OSM end-users together with shipping companies (such as GOTA and Colorline) at all stages of the service development whereby regular feedback was given to the project developers and based on this end user feedback, various iteration and improvements were carried out.
