Important results from the project

PACS2020 objective was to develop and validate the world’s first prototype of the Phoenix Advanced Combustion System (PACS) with ultra-low emissions and ultra-high fuel flexibility. The PACS targeted validation at atmospheric and pressurised conditions, for use with climate-neutral fuels like gasified biomass or natural gas and hydrogen mixtures. Further the project will prepare for market entry and integration in the full-scale Top Cycle gas turbine.

Expected long term effects

In the project, the combustion system has matured from early concept to an industrial prototype that is validated with atmospheric tests and with advanced simulation tools with good operational stability, low emissions and very high fuel flexibility. IPR has been generated in the form of a patent application, design guidelines, design tools, datasets and the system prototype. An industrial collaboration was initiated with a gas turbine manufacturer for the commercialization of the product.

Approach and implementation

PACS2020 has been a co-operative development project utilising four major tools to ensure a robust and high performing product: design tools (KTH); an atmospheric burner rig at TU Berlin for early concept characterisation; a new atmospheric combustion rig at Phoenix BioPower integrated with a biomass gasifier; and a pressurized combustion rig at TU Berlin for final validation.
