Digitalization of a pharmaceutical lab for process development and pilot production

Reference number
Coordinator Lunds universitet - Institutione för Kemiteknik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 5 000 000
Project duration March 2020 - February 2023
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA
Call PiiA: Digitalization of industrial value chains, autumn 2019

Important results from the project

The aim was to develop and demonstrate an open, general and modifiable digital platform for the integration of equipment for process development and pilot production of downstream processes for biologics. The project has very successfully demonstrated the concept for a number of cases. The platform´s ability to handle digital solutions has proven successful. Automatic modelling, data management and data storage as well as advanced model-based control have been tested with great success.

Expected long term effects

The main result of the project was the demonstration of a platform for a continuous antibody production. The platform means the automation of multiple systems in networks, which has been studied by industrial parties in the project. The technology, the methodology behind both physical and digital configuration, has been received and further developed by the project´s parties.

Approach and implementation

The project has been implemented as four work packages, work packages 1 to 4. Package 1 focused on the development of an integrated platform for the continuous manufacturing of biological drugs, especially having a process for antibody together with AdBIOPRO. Package 2 focused on digital representation, modeling and simulation, with very promising results. Package 3 integrated automatic data generation and data management with a real-time database. Package 4 studied advanced control of continuous processes.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
