Composite Structures with Intrinsic Graphene Sensors

Reference number
Coordinator Saab AB - SAAB Aktiebolag Aeronautics

Project duration October 2018 - September 2021
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme SIP LIGHTer

Purpose and goal

Incorporation of graphene / nanosensors for measuring temperature and elongation in composite structure has been demonstrated by incorporating VACNT in glass fiber composite and partly also in carbon fiber composite. Process monitoring during manufacture has been partially shown. Demonstration of VACNT-based sensors in a carbon fiber composite panel has started and is expected to be completed after the end of the project. Application of the technology in prepreg systems has worked, but development of application in wet systems requires more development.

Expected results and effects

Graphene oxide and VACNT has been incorporated into thin layers of composite laminate without adversely affecting mechanical properties. Installation of connectors and sensor materials has worked well in fiberglass composite. Strategies and technical solutions for stripping have been partly developed in the project. VACNT has worked well for elongation and temperature measurements in hardened composite laminates and partly to follow the hardening process. Graphene oxide has only been used for temperature measurements in hardened composites.

Planned approach and implementation

To a large extent, the goals have been achieved through KTH´s and Saab´s collaboration on VACNT as sensor material and carbon fiber mats as connectors. Danubia has contributed graphene oxide and knowledge about sensor function. LiU has contributed with an understanding of the graphene material and its interaction with the epoxy. Several project partners will continue to work for an upcoming demonstration. The implementation of the project has been affected by COVID as joint workshops could not be carried out and has thus affected the connection between the project´s three phases.
