Carbon composites beam

Reference number
Coordinator BITEAM Aktiebolag
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 083 951
Project duration August 2013 - April 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim was to show that carbon fiber composite beam can be produced and that those beams have load bearing properties comparable with steel beams but with a considerable lower weight. The unique material structure also shows that the I beams do not delaminate when put under strength. The international presentation of the I-beams and other profiles made by the same technology has given a great international respons.

Results and expected effects

The detailed test results shows that the manufactured test material made with exactly the same dimensions as a steel beam, indicated that a carbon fibre composite I-beam can be produced with same load bearing properties as a steel beam with 60 % lowerweight.

Approach and implementation

Together with KTH and Tyréns a profile was designed and produced by Biteam. Elitkomposit med a mould for injection of the beams. KTH made the mechanical testing and fire test was made by Inca International at Rosersberg fire test terminal. Market potential has been evaluated through contacts within the composite sector.
