Large Nordic efforts (sometimes also initiatives) on research and innovation in individualized medicine

Published: 7 November 2024

Individualized medicine allows to offer each individual patient a more precise and targeted diagnosis and treatment. The Nordic countries make a joint venture on research and innovation in the area, where Vinnova has now decided on funding by the Swedish parties in the projects.

The projects receive funding in an efforts (sometimes also initiatives) made by NordForsk together with five Nordic innovation authorities. Seven project can share a total of SEK 173 million, of which just over SEK 70 million goes to Swedish parties. Swedish participation is available in five of the projects. The disease areas covered are infection, gastrointestinal disease, rheumatoid arthritis and prostate cancer diagnosis. A project follows up on health economics.

- It is important to find new solutions that can improve for patients with severe diseases. The initiative also means that the Nordic region can strengthen its position with the rest of the world. We are already good at this, but we have even greater potential if we cooperate, ”says Elisabet Nielsen, program manager at Vinnova.

Project that receives Swedish funding in the venture:

NorDCaP
The fundamental idea behind NorDCaP is to implement individualized treatment to ensure better and more accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer. It will provide better quality of life for patients and increase the number of people who survive prostate cancer. The treatment will also create higher quality care for patients and a more cost-effective and sustainable health care system.

PERAID
The project will implement individualized medicine in serious infectious diseases with a focus on life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis (infection of carnivorous bacteria) and treatment of patients with blood poisoning.
Project leader: Anna Norrby-Teglund, Karolinska Institutet

NORA
The aim of the NORA project is to develop individualized approaches to the treatment of arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) using new prediction models and digital tools.
Project leader: Johan Askling, Karolinska Institutet

NORTH TREAT
The overall goal of the project is to improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by introducing a new individualized medical algorithm based on -omics data.
Project leader: Jonas Halfvarson, Örebro University
