Important results from the project
The goals were to reduce the amount of hazardous waste and amount of oil from spills and leaks in nature, find a system that works both as a reporting system for oil spills and a trading site of regenerated waste oil, and find new solutions for regenerating oil. We have succeeded in producing a sufficiently large amount of material with maximized absorption (up to 14 times its own weight) and hydrophobic capacity which gives the material fluidity in water and which sucks up and retains oil but not water. We have developed a digital tool that supports a business model that is in demand by the market.
Expected long term effects
We have been able to show that an innovative bio-based absorbent is extremely efficient compared to what the market offers today, eg. in absorption capacity, applications and environmental impact. A trading site for regenerated waste oils and their residual value would lead to increased business benefit and better resource efficiency.
Approach and implementation
The project included 4 work packages: 1. Product testing in different environments for waste oil collection and leakage 2. Develop a digital platform that enables circular flows of waste oil 3. Develop a circular business model based on the platform 4. Study on waste oil regeneration in Sweden
