Purpose and goal

The aim of KVAST has been to identify critical and structural factors and development issues in order to develop the market niche for production, sales and use of quality-assured urban fertilizers. By urban fertilizers we mean plant nutrients originating from source-separating wastewater flowstreams. KVAST has investigated nutrient recycling from two perspectives: relatively "direct" recycling (the waste niche) and for recycling of processed urban fertilizers where the products are near/reached an end-of-waste classification.

Expected results and effects

The critical and structural factors of importance for further development of the market niches for source-separated wastewater flowstreams were analyzed via an interview study of 18 people in 16 different organizations and via a strategic analysis. The results were presented and processed by the project participants at two different workshop occations and eventually led to a plan which will be used in the preparation for Stage 2. KVAST thereby achieved its set goals for Stage 1 and is well placed to contribute to the project´s impact goals in the short and long term.

Planned approach and implementation

KVAST Stage 1 had a simple construction. The market analysis was based on an interview study of key players who together represented producers of urban fertilizers (water utilities), key end users (agricultural operators) and key players for the business part (fertilizer agents, biosolids brokers). The strategic analysis was based on the project group´s overall expertise and the gathering of additional information digitally. The results were verified in workshop format by the entire project team. We also prioritized the results in a workshop format, for prep. of future proposal.
