Purpose and goal
Silicon carbide (SiC) is becoming increasingly popular, especially as an efficient transistor in fast chargers and some electric cars. Unfortunately, SiC is not fully utilized due to its high manufacturing cost and for geopolitical reasons. Xtal.works has developed a method to manufacture SiC crystals that is faster and more energy efficient. In this project we will demonstrate crystals with a diameter of 200 mm and a manufacturing speed 10 times higher than the current manufacturing method.
Expected effects and result
Xtal.works will produce European SiC substrates that can compete with heavily subsidized alternatives from Asia. Our manufacturing method also requires less energy and graphite. The green transition will increasingly need SiC components as savings of 20% can be realized on all electricity produced.
Planned approach and implementation
We will expand the crystal diameter from 100 mm to 200 mm and simultaneously optimize the process to the larger diameter. Commercialization will be through B2B sales to our beta customers.
