Waveguide-Integrated Graphene Based mid-Infrared Detectors for Optical Gas Sensor Chips

Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - Skolan för elektro- och systemteknik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 966 999
Project duration December 2014 - August 2015
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen

Purpose and goal

1) The partners have exchanged knowledge during the project through discussions of design and results, and through the writing of a follow-up project proposal. 2) KTH has developed a new process for the fabrication of suspended silicon waveguides onto which graphene detectors can be integrated. 3) The performance of the suspended silicon waveguides has been evaluated. 4) The commercial potential has been evaluated.

Results and expected effects

Through our work in this pre-study project, the partners have been able to submit a competitive proposal called ´Waveguide-Integrated Graphene Based Mid-Infrared Detectors for Optical Gas Sensor Chips´ to the FlagERA Graphene call, with two new international partners. Thereby the partners have already expanded their international network in the graphene community.

Approach and implementation

The project plan consisted of two work packages: WP1 Knowledge transfer and WP2 mid-IR detector prototype. WP1 was executed mostly through discussions on the requirements for a IR detectors in gas sensor chips. These results guided the prototype design, and formed the core of the follow up application to FlagERA Graphene. WP2 was executed through common design meetings, by fabrication of the prototype in the KTH clean-room, and evaluation at the KTH characterization laboratories. This method of operation worked well.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
