Virtual assistant with sign language for deaf and other with language difficulties

Important results from the project

The project has resulted in a digital assistant that gives people with communication difficulties better opportunities to communicate. The original target group was deaf people, but the need was also found among people with aphasia and those affected by stroke or neurological injuries. The service aims to increase independence by enabling communication in situations when other assistance is unavailable. This makes it possible to move freely in society without always depending on an interpreter.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, the service is expected to contribute to increased independence, freedom and participation for people with communication difficulties. It will reduce dependence on interpreters in everyday situations and give greater opportunity to communicate, obtain information and move freely. The service can also contribute to better communication within social services and give more groups with communication difficulties the opportunity for a more independent and quality life.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out through close collaboration with technical expertise, sign language knowledge and an understanding of the target group’s needs. The work included development of the digital assistant, processing sign language material, testing and adaptation. The project largely followed the plan but the sign language material and technical integration took longer than expected. The animation needs refinement.Collaboration worked well and provided insights into a broader target group.
