Important results from the project
This project aims to develop a composite to improve the manufacturability of semi-transparent polymeric shields for security applications by using graphene, a robust, UV-absorbing, and high-transmissivity material, in a composite to replace existing brittle coatings. The feasibility study will investigate if a mix of graphene and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) can be used as a protective coating for riot shields, such as those used by the Swedish police.
Expected long term effects
The project resulted in successful graphene dispersion with PMMA in organic solvents. The dispersion was used to coat glass substrates and the coatings were characterized in terms of optical transmission, hydrophobicity, microstructure and UV light resistance. Coatings with higher graphene concentrations have lower transmissions and UV light exposure with 24 hours of sun like intensity did not affect the coatings properties.
Approach and implementation
The project was completed on schedule and delivered the expected results. The project partners collaborated effectively and established a solid workflow for ongoing operations. Furthermore, the team´s dedication and clear communication were key factors in the project´s success, laying a strong foundation for future collaborations.
