Important results from the project

The aim of the project was to develop knowledge and share insights that support spreading and scaling of the BeChange method and service. This has been done, focused on the method and models that could be used to stimulate citizens and employees to increased climate engagemang within their own life and their circle of influence. The project also aimed to further develop and test a scalable solution. This has also been done. The technical prerequisites for scaling exist, and models for continued adaptation and practical scaling have been developed during the project period.

Expected long term effects

During the project, a hybrid version of the BeChange program format was adapted and tried out for the target group individuals/citizens (in Umeå municipality) and for the target group "employees/ municipality as a workplace" (Luleå and Huddinge municipality). Participants achieved a stronger commitment, reduced climate impact and increased well-being. A guidebook has been developed which highlights values and opportunities to continue utialize the BeChange method based on the insights made. A sharing session has been held together with "klimatkommunerna".

Approach and implementation

Based on project insights, the biggest barrier to scaling right now is a lack of investment and a coordinating authority. It would be a tremendous enabler for the councils if the state (e.g. the Konsumentverket, the Naturvårdsverket or the Regions) took the main responsibility for both the financing of the service, the distribution to the councils and synchronization between lessons learned, adaptations and coordination between the councils. Large investments are made for climate-smart infrastructure and technology, and are needed also for behavioral change solutions to succeed.
