Purpose and goal
The project will develop concept and technology solutions for a radar-based safety system for bicyclists. The goal is to improve awareness for bicyclists, improve coordination between motor vehicles within the smart traffic system and thereby improve traffic safety. With improved safety more people will feel safe and comfortable while biking which will improve green and safe city development.
Expected results and effects
For active safety in vehicles, the state of art integrates radar-, lidar-, and camera-based sensors to create awareness for the vehicle and driver. Applying this kind of system on a bicycle would be unfeasible, since the cost would in some cases be as much as the entire bicycle. In this project we therefore propose a low-cost sensor solution that improves traffic safety for bicycles that consist of only one of these sensors - the radar - the cheapest and most robust solution.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will first identify the most relevant traffic safety related use-cases that involve bicycles. Secondly, a radar-based safety system for bicycles is developed with both sensor and human interface. Different interactionmethods between the bicycle and the bicyclist will be evaluated during the project. Finally, the system is evaluated in relevant traffic situations.
