Important results from the project
Volta Greentech’s goal in Steg II was to identify and improve “Downstream” product processing - including harvesting, drying and packaging - to increase the methane reduction potential of its seaweed. By comparing and evaluating several critical components in its production, several important discoveries were made, and subsequently implemented. These findings have had concrete implications for both the product quality, and the company’s future research roadmap.
Expected long term effects
The projects initial research phase identified several key potential improvements. Two critical steps in the “Downstream” process relating to dewatering and drying yielded prior to the project a significant decrease in product quality. After benchmarking several alternatives, new processes were tested and implemented in the factory, which has led most importantly to improved product quality, but also significantly faster turnaround times in production and on-site research, the latter due to improved processing for packaging and storage.
Approach and implementation
During Step 1, critical points in the production were identified for the quality of the algae. As several indications showed that targeted improvements of "Downstream" may have a greater impact on our product than previously thought, an updated overview of this process was first initiated together with external consultants, followed by an in-depth analysis of various available alternative updated technologies. The implementation of these conclusions led to several key developments in the company´s "Downstream" process, an improved product and a grounds for further development.
